Extreme Environmental Testing Chambers for High-Density PCBs

The environmental test chambers can simulate extreme thermal shock and high-humidity offset conditions.

The Engineering Challenge

As Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) transition into High-Density Interconnects (HDI),which is with 12+ layers and microscopic blind/buried vias, the margin for error disappears. Subjecting these complex laminates to the brutal heat of lead-free SMT reflow or harsh field environments triggers catastrophic structural failures

Z-Axis Expansion & Micro-Via Cracking

AA-FR4 fiberglass and copper have different Coefficients of Thermal Expansion (CTE). When a PCB is heated past its Glass Transition Temperature (Tg), the FR4 expands violently in the Z-axis (thickness). This acts like a hydraulic press stretching the internal copper vias. If the copper plating is too thin or the thermal shock is too severe, the via barrel snaps, severing internal connections and causing immediate board failure

Conductive Anodic Filament (CAF) Growth

In high-humidity environments, moisture permeates the epoxy resin between the woven glass fibers. When a constant DC voltage bias is applied across tightly spaced vias , copper ions dissolve and migrate along the glass fiber interfaces. This creates a microscopic, conductive metallic bridge (CAF) that causes catastrophic internal short-circuits, completely bypassing the PCB’s designed isolation

Microscopic cross-section of a cracked copper via barrel in a multi-layer PCB caused by Z-axis thermal expansion

Delamination & Measling

Improperly cured resins or trapped moisture will boil into steam during sudden thermal excursions. This vapor pressure blows apart the internal layers of the PCB, showing up visually as white spots (measling) or complete structural delamination, ruining the mechanical integrity of the substrate

Why PCB need Climatic testing Chambers?

FAQ

Q1: Why do we need thermal shock testing if our PCBs only operate at room temperature?

Even if the end-product operates at room temperature, the PCB must survive the SMT assembly process. Wave soldering and reflow ovens subject the board to spikes of 260°C. If the via plating is weak or the resin is flawed, the board will sustain micro-fractures during assembly. Thermal shock testing ensures the bare board can survive the manufacturing process without latent damage.

2-Zone: Moves the product basket directly from the Hot zone to the Cold zone in seconds. It induces the most severe, instantaneous thermal stress and is the standard for most bare-board via integrity tests.

3-Zone: The product remains stationary while Hot, Ambient, and Cold air are blown in. It includes a resting phase at room temperature between extremes, which is often specified for certain populated PCBA stress tests to simulate slower, natural environmental shifts.

Yes, this is a critical design feature. If a water droplet falls on a live board during a CAF test, it destroys the data. JCT Constant Temperature & Humidity chambers feature an engineered sloped ceiling and precise laminar airflow. Any condensation formed on the interior ceiling flows down the walls into a drainage system, never dripping onto your payload.

You will typically need a Rapid Rate Thermal Cycling Chamber capable of 10°C/min to 20°C/min. Standard chambers (1-3°C/min) are too slow to induce the necessary mechanical fatigue

Yes. The touchscreen controllers are equipped with RS-485, Ethernet TCP/IP, and Modbus communication protocols. They easily slave to your central lab software , allowing for synchronized test profiles and real-time remote data logging

The primary maintance tasks include that the pneumatic system (which moves the basket) is supplied with clean, dry compressed air to prevent valve freezing, routinely cleaning the refrigeration condenser fins, and scheduling an annual RTD sensor calibration to satisfy ISO/IEC 17025 audits.

For PCB fabricators and EMS providers, the ROI is typically realized in 4 to 8 months. Outsourcing a single 1,000-hour CAF test or a 500-cycle thermal shock test to a third-party lab is incredibly expensive and delays product releases.

In-house testing allows you to instantly validate new laminate materials, pass OEM audits faster, and eliminate the risk of shipping a million boards with latent via defects
