Crossing the AEC-Q100 Valley of Death
Client Location: Midwest, USA
Industry: Tier-2 Automotive Electronics Supplier
Core Challenge: Failing strict AEC-Q100 thermal shock reliability tests and risking the loss of a major global OEM contract.
Solution Deployed: JCT Thermal Shock Test Chamber
Key Result: Passed all automotive qualification tests on schedule and secured the multi-million dollar global contract.
The Challenge: Stuck in the AEC-Q100 Trap
For our client in North America, landing a supply deal with a big car brand is a huge deal. But to get the contract, they had to pass AEC-Q100 testing—the strict standard for automotive integrated circuits and electronics.
Their prototype control modules kept failing the thermal shock test. During sudden swings from extreme cold to extreme heat, microscopic cracks formed inside the solder joints on the circuit boards.
Every time a test failed, it set them back weeks. The car maker was breathing down their neck with a hard deadline. If they missed it, another supplier would take their spot. They were stuck in what the engineering team called the “valley of death.” Their old test setup was slow, hard to program, and gave them inconsistent results that left them guessing what went wrong.
How We Fixed It with JCT Thermal Shock Chambers
The client reached out to us needing a reliable way to stress-test their boards right in their own testing lab. They didn’t want a generic machine; they needed a chamber that could switch temperatures fast and hold precise zones.
We supplied them with a JCT multi-zone thermal shock test chamber.
The machine uses a fast-transfer basket design to move parts between hot and cold zones within seconds. We also set them up with a clear, easy-to-use touch controller so their techs could program exact cycle times without a headache. When the chamber arrived, our support team helped them set it up and run a dry test on day one.
Real Results on HIS FACTORY Floor
Having a stable, fast-acting test chamber changed everything for their lab team:
Passing the Test: With reliable thermal cycles, they quickly spotted where the solder joints were weak, redesigned the board layout, and finally passed the full AEC-Q100 test cycle.
Winning the Contract: They handed the passing lab report to the car brand right before the deadline, securing their global supply contract.
In-House Testing Speed: Now they don’t have to send parts out to expensive testing labs. They run their own tests overnight and get answers the next morning.
