Airtight Laser Welding & Cleaning for HVAC Ductwork

JCT’s advanced laser processing solutions enable the production of high-pressure HVAC pipes and ducts with excellent airtightness, completely eliminating issues such as leaks at mechanical joints, toxic bituminous sealants and burn-through of thin sheets; the products comply directly with the SMACNA Class 3+ standard.

The Fabrication Challenge

Commercial HVAC systems are moving towards high-velocity, high-pressure designs。Traditional duct fabrication methods—relying on Pittsburgh locks, snap-locks, rivets, and spot welding—are struggling to keep up with modern airtightness demands

Sealant Dependency and Air Leakage

Mechanical seams inherently leak. To meet high-pressure building codes, fabricators must manually smear toxic, messy mastic sealants or tape over every joint and elbow. This process is incredibly slow, requires long curing times, and the sealants dry out, crack, and fail over the duct’s lifespan, leading to massive energy loss in the building

Burn-Through on Thin-Gauge Metal

HVAC ducts utilize highly economical, thin-gauge galvanized steel (typically 26 to 16 gauge / 0.5mm to 1.5mm). using TIG or MIG weld these thin sheets often results in immediate burn-through. The high heat destroys the duct’s structural integrity and leaves ugly, warped panels.

Galvanized Zinc Spatter and Rust

When welding custom plenums or heavy-duty grease ducts, traditional arc welding hits the zinc coating and causes violent popping and spatter. Not only does this create porous, weak welds, but the massive heat footprint vaporizes the surrounding zinc, leaving the duct highly susceptible to rust in humid commercial ceiling spaces

Why HVAC EquipmentNeed laser welding?

Pre-weld laser ablation removing zinc from the seam of a galvanized air duct

Precision Zinc Ablation (Surface Prep)

Before welding galvanized seams on custom plenums, switch the JCT system to cleaning mode. The laser precisely ablates the zinc coating only along the 2mm weld track. This completely eliminates zinc outgassing and porosity during welding, while leaving the rest of the duct’s rust-preventative coating perfectly intact

High-speed, continuous laser welding on a galvanized HVAC elbow fitting)

Autogenous Hermetic Welding

Switch to welding mode to fuse elbows, transitions, and straight ducts. The continuous wave (CW) laser travels at incredible speeds, melting the thin edges together. The heat is so localized that 24-gauge metal will not warp or burn through. The result is a continuous, airtight seam that replaces Pittsburgh locks and rivets in seconds.

Post-weld laser cleaning on a stainless steel commercial kitchen grease duct)

Post-Weld Cleaning for Stainless/Cleanroom Ducts

When fabricating exposed architectural stainless steel ductwork or hygienic cleanroom exhausts, aesthetics and purity both matter. Switch back to cleaning mode to instantly sweep away any residual heat tint from the weld seam. The duct is left bright, passivated, and ready for immediate installation

Laser Solutions for HAVC Duct Fabricators

Custom HVAC fittings, rectangular elbows, transition pieces, and commercial grease ducts.

The ultimate tool for the custom sheet metal shop. Enables operators to rapidly weld complex geometric fittings without burn-through on 22-gauge to 16-gauge metal. Replaces noisy spot welders and messy caulking stations. The instant cleaning mode expertly preps galvanized seams.

High-volume straight spiral duct seams, standardized VAV (Variable Air Volume) boxes, and longitudinal seam welding.

Pairs our continuous wave (CW) lasers with automated linear trackers or robotics. Delivers flawless, airtight continuous longitudinal welds on thousands of meters of ductwork. Removes the speed bottleneck of mechanical seamers and guarantees 100% SMACNA compliance on every run.

Precision zinc removal on heavy duct flanges, TDC/TDF corner prep, and restoration of outdoor HVAC units.

Uses nanosecond pulses to strip zinc and heavy oxidation precisely where thick angle-iron flanges meet thin duct walls. It ensures structural integrity for high-pressure systems without thinning the duct material via abrasive grinding.

FAQ

Q1: We use Pittsburgh locks and mastic for everything. Why switch to laser welding for ducts?

Laser welding fuses the metal into a single, permanently airtight piece instantly. It can elevate your ductwork to handle high-pressure commercial classes easily, eliminating the labor and material costs of sealants.

No.

Burn-through happens with TIG/MIG because the arc spreads too much heat. The laser focuses intense energy into a microscopic spot, melting and freezing the metal in milliseconds. You can easily and continuously weld highly sensitive thin sheet metal without blowout or warpin

Traditional welding does.

JCT lasers feature a “wobble” (oscillating) head that stirs the weld pool, allowing the zinc vapor to escape before the steel freezes—preventing porosity. Furthermore, our 3-in-1 welder allows you to use the laser to precisely clean the zinc off the exact weld track before welding, ensuring a pure, strong joint.

Absolutely.

Grease ducts require continuous, liquid-tight welds to prevent fire hazards. The laser provides deep-penetration, flawless seams on stainless steel that easily pass stringent liquid-tight inspections. You can then use the cleaning mode to remove any heat tint, keeping the duct sanitary.

For galvanised carbon steel, nitrogen or a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide is typically used as a shielding gas. For large-scale duct manufacturing facilities, producing nitrogen in-house using a nitrogen generator  is extremely cost-effective.

Because the machine automatically regulates the heat and wire feed, the operator simply needs to learn the travel speed and angle. Most sheet metal fabricators, even those with zero arc welding experience, can produce airtight laser seams within a couple of hours of hands-on training.

This three-in-one handheld laser welder is fitted with castors; it is lightweight and portable, making it ideal for outdoor welding work, but it must be fitted with a laser safety shield and safety goggles must be worn.

ROI is typically achieved in 4 to 8 months. You save massive amounts of time by replacing spot welding, riveting, and manual caulking. You eliminate the cost of mastic sealants.
